Brief Bio:
Dr. Nelson received his PhD from Kent State University in 2013. His Doctoral Dissertation was a finalist for the 2014 ASEEES Stephen Cohen-Robert Tucker Dissertation Prize. He received his MA from the School of International Service at American University in 1998. His research interests are Memory Politics of Russia and Ukraine, Human Rights, Genocide and Mass Killing, Comparative Politics and International Relations.

From 2000 to 2004, he served as a Russian/German/Ukrainian Linguist and Interrogator in the Military Intelligence Corps of the US Army. He spent nine months deployed to Kosovo in 2002/2003, where he earned the Army Commendation Medal and the Army Achievement Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster.

From 1996-1999, he was the subject matter expert on Russian affairs in the Global Organized Crime Project (now the Transnational Threats Initiative) at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Nelson spent two years at university in St. Petersburg, Russia in the early to mid-1990s. He speaks fluent Russian and German, with some Ukrainian, Polish, and French.

His first book, "Bringing Stalin Back In: Memory Politics and the Creation of a Useable Past in Putin's Russia," was published by Lexington Books in October 2019. He conducted fieldwork in Poland in the summer of 2022, and is currently writing a book on how the Holocaust is understood in Poland.
 
Creative and Activities:
Lest all of this makes him sound stuffy and boring, Dr. Nelson also plays lead guitar in a heavy metal band in Cleveland.

His primary interest is in the use(s) of history for political purposes.
