Brief Bio:
Richard M. Perloff, Professor of Communication, Psychology, and Political Science at Cleveland State University, is a nationally known scholar of the psychology of media perceptions, persuasion, and political communication.  His book, The Dynamics of Persuasion: Communication and Attitudes in the 21st Century (7th edition), is a staple scholarly persuasion text. Perloff has also written four other books, including The Dynamics of Political Communication (3rd edition) and The Dynamics of News.  

In his scholarship, Professor Perloff has focused on the psychology of biased perceptions of media, particularly the hostile media bias and the third-person effect, publishing articles on these and other topics in such journals as Communication Research, Mass Communication and Society, Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, Journalism Practice, and Sex Roles. His theoretical article in Communication Theory won the 2014 University of Amsterdam School of Communication Research McQuail Award, for the best article advancing communication theory.

Perloff has also published feature articles on topics ranging from wheelchair basketball to young people's romance in Cleveland Scene and Cleveland Jewish News. His many opinion pieces on politics, media and history have appeared in The Plain Dealer; his letters to the editor on contemporary issues have appeared in The New York Times, and a 50-year anniversary op ed on the May 4, 1970 Kent State shootings appeared in The New York Times on May 4, 2020.

Perloff is a Fellow of the Midwestern Association for Public Association Research, former president of MAPOR, and former head of the Communication Theory and Methodology Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. Professor Perloff has been a dedicated, active supporter of Cleveland State University, serving as chair and founding director of the School of Communication from 2003 to 2011. He also enjoys teaching undergraduate and graduate classes, thriving on opportunities to teach and mentor and students, and is the recipient of teaching awards, including two Golden Apple awards.
Perloff received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan, majoring in philosophy, a Masters from University of Pittsburgh, Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in mass communications, and a postdoctoral fellowship from Ohio State University in social psychology and mass communication.

He has been on the faculty at Cleveland State since 1979, enjoying scholarship, writing, and teaching,  as well as daily pursuits such as Starbucks coffee, reading newspapers, outdoor exercise, robust jokes, beer, and lots of Amazon books.
