Brief Bio: |
| I was trained in England at the universities of Durham and Cambridge where I studied sociology and criminology. I moved to CSU in 1989 and have spent my career here. |

Research Interests: |
| I began my academic career studying sociology and criminology with a focus on theory and the history of ideas.
I have written about prominent social theorists - most particularly Erving Goffman. My aim has been to clarify and develop theoretical ideas whilst understanding the contexts out of which they arose. I then began looking at ordinary social situations and the role language played in structuring our understanding of what was taking place. Specifically I studied shyness as something accomplished in social interaction through verbal strategies of self-presentation. I then took the the same theoretical framework and applied it to the work of physicians and their patients as they negotiate primary care consultations. This led to a more general interest in the identification of best practices for qualitative sociology, particularly ethnography. More recently I have been part of an NSF funded research team that has created a new way for people to use multiple passwords in the course of their daily life. This work has been published and patented. Currently I am thinking about how institutions such as CSU can improve their rates of success in federal and other funding. |
