Brief Bio:
Sorption and Transport of Organic Pollutants in Subsurface Environment

Transport, fate and removal of toxic organic pollutants in soil is highly dependent on their sorptive behavior. The goal of this project is to document possible competitive sorption occurring in multicomponent mixtures of organic contaminants on subsurface materials, to determine physical and chemical conditions that promote this competition, and to establish the magnitude of competitive interactions. The work that need to be done involves single/multicomponent batch adsorption/desorption studies, soil column studies, and theoretical model development.

Soil Decontamination by Enhanced Extraction through Salting-in

The change in solubility of a nonelectrolyte in water from addition of an electrolyte presents enhancement of extraction processes in environmental applications. If the dielectrolyte constant, the criterion of polarity, of the saturated nonelectrolyte solution is above that of water, the nonelectrolyte becomes more soluble in the salt solution, or salted-in. This project explores the leaching of organic contaminants of limited solubility by water through salting in phenomenon. The work involved is experimental batch leching and solubility studies, and parameter analysis and model development.
