Brief Bio:
I am Director of the Center for Research in the Urban Environment, and Environmental Science Undergraduate Program Director in the Department of Biological, Geological and Environmental Science at Cleveland State University.

I have B.A. and M.S. degrees in Biology (aquatic focus) from Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti, Michigan, and a Ph.D. in Natural Resources from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan.  Before coming to Cleveland State, I taught at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, limnology at Kellogg Biological Field Station, Michigan State University. I was a senior researcher for the Danish Geological Survey, living in Copenhagen, Denmark for 2 years.

My primary research focuses on understanding urban and urbanizing environments and the effects of human activities on freshwater and wetland ecosystems. I use a combination of contemporary data, paleolimnological techniques, and quantitative environmental reconstruction to estimate past conditions and natural variability, to identify disturbances, determine rates of change, and realistic recovery endpoints in aquatic/wetland ecosystems.

I work with and provide scientific expertise to regional partners including: State of Ohio, Attorney General Yost's Environmental Council of Advisors, The Cuyahoga County Planning Commission, The Cleveland MetroParks, the Cuyahoga River Area of Concern.

I am a member of the International Association of Great Lakes Research, Ohio Lake Management Society, and the Society of Wetland Scientists.

I have mentored many undergraduate and graduate researchers. I teach courses in Aquatic Ecosystems, Ecology, Great Lakes, Stream, and Wetland Ecology.
