Brief Bio: |
| Joan Thoman first received her diploma in nursing at St. Vincent Charity Hospital School of Nursing in Toledo, Ohio. Later she earned both her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from the University of Akron, College of Nursing and a PhD in Nursing Research from Kent State University in 2009. Her clinical experiences as a registered nurse includes hospital medical surgical units, charge nurse, public health, as a visiting home care nurse, and as a diabetes program coordinator. Joan has experience in staff development, informatics and management.
Joan is credited with implementing and maintaining the Diabetes Self Management Skills and Training Program at St. Vincent Charity Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio which achieved recognition from the American Diabetes Association in August 2002. In 2003, Joan was selected by her nursing peers to receive the award of Outstanding Excellence in Clinical Nursing.
She started a multidisciplinary Diabetes Resource Team to address both in-patient and out-patient needs. In collaboration with the hospital's community outreach department, she started a community health worker program for the diabetes center.
In 2004, Joan was key in assisting the hospital become an affiliate of the Joslin Diabetes Center which has a philosophy of an integrated team approach for the care of people with diabetes. Joan assisted in implementing a medical clinic portion to augment the education program based on the Joslin diabetes standards of care. In October 2004, St. Vincent Charity Hospital recognized Joan as "Caregiver of the Month" for her work with the Joslin Diabetes Center. In June, 2005, Joan was selected to receive the Distinguished Women in Health Care award for clinical practice and was featured in Cleveland Magazine. She has been a registered nurse for over 25 years. She continues her program of research and teaching at Cleveland State University School of Nursing. |

2013-present Remediation plan crafted for students not successful in passing the
NCLEX Predictor. This remediation plan is a dynamic process as the
needs of the students vary.

April, 2011 Renewal of CITI for the Protection of Human Research Subjects
2010-2013 Participated with a Human Performance Consortium (HPC). The HPC is
comprised of researchers from both academic and service sector areas
for the purpose of possible collaboration.
2010 -2013 Applied and was chosen as one of the participants for the Outside
Research Mentor for Assistant Professors Program through the Office of
Applied Research. Through this program, working with research mentor,
Dr. Mary Anthony, Associate Dean of Research from Kent State

and mental health in the specialty area of community health nursing.

| Jan., 2014 Sigma Theta Tau International CSU Nu Delta Chapter, accepted as a delegate
representing the CSU Nu Delta chapter.
2013-present Take between 7-10 students from Nurse Christian Fellowship (NCF), Student
Nurses Association (SNA) and Minority Association of Nursing Students
(MANS)to monthly service opportunities at Corey Church and 2100 Lakeside
Men's Shelter (homeless shelter). Students perform foot checks, blood
glucose checks, blood pressure checks, health teaching and referrals for
follow up.
Dec., 2013 Took 7-8 students to the 2100 Lakeside Men¿s Homeless Shelter to do foot
checks, blood glucose checks, health teaching and referrals for follow up.
June 29, 2013 Took 12 students to Merrick House in Tremont to do health screenings for
Hispanic and their families 9 am to 2 pm.
2011-2014 Serve as a member of the American Diabetes Association of Northeast Ohio interdisciplinary planning committee for the Circles of Hospital Awards
for 2012, 2013 and 2014.
June, 2012 American Diabetes Association. Invited to be a member of the Advocacy
Committee by the American Diabetes Association
May, 2011 Arranged students who volunteered to provide educational sessions to
grades 1-5 at Urban School in near west side neighborhood of Cleveland.
The topics were hygiene and nutrition food portion size. Assisted the
students with content and presentation plan for these experiences. The
students volunteered after the official semester was over for CSU.
June 11, 2011 Took 10 students to the Medworks interdisciplinary community screening
initiative on a Saturday 7 am to 1 pm.
Spring, 2010 Arranged health assessment and flu vaccine clinic at 2100 Lakeside Men¿s
Homeless Shelter. For the 82 patients who received an H1N1 vaccine, as
organizing faculty I entered all patient information on the Ohio
Department of Health web site for all vaccines administered by the
students (under faculty direction).

| 5/15 Co-Principle Investigator with Dr. Pam Rutar, NEOMED/Area Health Education
Center(AHEC). This is a collaborative pipeline initiative representing many
intraprofessional programs to bring an AHEC to the Cleveland region. This
initiative is to promote intraprofessional education, serve as a pipeline for
children to interest them in the health professions and provide health focused
interventions to the community.
4/15 Principle Investigator with co-investigators Dr. Pam Rutar and Professor Bimpe
Adedipe, McGregor Foundation: Healing Hands at Home: Preparing Nurses for Home
Care and Hospice Practice. This workforce development initiative is to start a
home care/hospice curriculum.
7/14 Principle investigator National Institutes of Health (NIH): Diabetes Health
Sense comparison group site
5/14 Co-principle investigator with Dr. Pam Rutar for an initiative through
MEDTAPP(federal grant run through the states) entitled Improved Health Outcomes
and Programs through Education (I-HOPE). This workforce development initiative
is to start a community health worker (CHW) program that is Ohio Board of
Nursing (OBN) certified and is combined with the Stanford Chronic
Disease Self-Management (CDSM) intervention Group Leader certification.
2/14 Co-principle investigator with Dr. Linda Wolf and Professor David Foley
Diversity Inclusion Engagement Grant. To expand the outreach and increase
diversity education and service learning for Nursing students whole also
providing service learning for Nursing students while also providing much
needed services and medical attention working in community agencies, homeless
shelters, etc.. Written for Community Health Nursing clinical groups and for
three student nursing organizations (Nurses Christian Fellowship [NCF], Student
Nurses Association [SNA], Minority Association of Nursing Students [MANS]) to
provide funds and resources for expendable supplies used during these
activities.
7/13-7/14 Co-investigator with Dr. Ken Sparks and graduate student Shane Draper from the
College of Education and Human Performance on the initiative Effects of
Intermittent Pneumatic Compression on Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) in
Long Distance Runners.
4/13 Co-principle investigator with Dr. Pam Rutar (along with Dr. Linda Wolf) for an
initiative through the Ohio Minority commission on Health involving a program
using the Stanford Chronic Disease Diabetes Self-Management model for the
management of diabetes in the community setting.
10/12 Contributing author (with Dr. Pam Rutar and Dr. Linda Wolf) for an initiative
involving an online orientation and mentoring program for faculty within the
school of nursing to promote retention and ease transition to a faculty role |
