Brief Bio: |
| Crystal M. Weyman, PhD, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Biological, Geological and Environmental Sciences at Cleveland State University. She received her BS degree in Chemistry, summa cum laude, from Mansfield University, Mansfield PA, and a PhD in Biochemistry from Purdue. She then completed fellowships in Molecular Biology and Cell Biology at the Cleveland Clinic before joining CSU in 1998.
Dr. Weyman¿s research focus is to understand the signaling pathways that coordinately regulate the mutually exclusive biological endpoints of differentiation and apoptosis (programmed cell death) in skeletal myoblasts. Dissecting this coordinate regulation could enable selective manipulation relevant to the amelioration of disease states associated with muscle degeneration and to the effectiveness of any treatment utilizing skeletal myoblast transfer.
In 2007, Dr. Weyman was recognized with the College of Science¿s Outstanding Teacher Award. In 2009, she won the University Distinguished Faculty Research Award. She has mentored 10 doctoral students and served on 71 doctoral dissertation committees. Since 2000, her lab has been continuously funded by the NIH and other sources totaling over 2 million dollars. Dr. Weyman has been a study section member for the American Heart Association and has served CSU as Founding Director of the Center for Gene Regulation in Health and Disease and Interim Dean of the College of Graduate Studies. |
